EXCITING NEWS! We are thrilled to announce that Brenda Bonuke Bogonko has officially joined the Tumbao Bilingual Books family!
Brenda is a Kenyan-born storyteller whose words weave between worlds, cultures, and languages. Now based in Spain, her writing captures the tender strength of girlhood, the complexities of family, and the quiet magic of resilience.
Her forthcoming novel for readers in grades 3-8, The Girl Who Wanted to Fly / La Niña que Quería Volar, is a luminous love letter to every child who dares to dream beyond the boundaries set before them.
This story is her tribute to dreamers, to mothers who hold the world together, and to fathers who believe in their children’s right to touch the sky. With warmth, honesty, and a distinctive voice rooted in memory and longing, Brenda writes to heal, to uplift, and to remind us that stories can grow wings where once there was only silence.
We are deeply honored to welcome Brenda to our author community — and we can't wait to share her unforgettable story with readers ages 9–14.
📚 Stay tuned — The Girl Who Wanted to Fly / La Niña que Quería Volar is on the horizon.

Praise for Everything is Different Here. Again. Welcoming Gustavo
"This beautiful bilingual book gives children and adults alike a window into the world of brave little Gustavo as he navigates a new home and school - again. Combining well-placed pauses to ask readers how they think Gustavo feels; modern, clean drawings that support positive emotional responses to the characters and story; and a useful list of tips for adult educators, this will be a welcome resource in all classrooms with immigrant students. Kudos to the authors for integrating our newcomers' experiences into the core curriculum."
-Dr. Kim Potowski, Professor of Spanish and Education, University of Illinois at Chicago
"Dr. Rita Guzman and Valerie Butrón have done it again! They have given us another beautifully crafted book that makes connections to the lives of many of our students; traveling to a new country, starting at a new school, and navigating the differences between their home country and the United States. 'Everything is Different Here. Again. Welcoming Gustavo' provides readers with the opportunity to learn about Gustavo's struggles in navigating so many new and different experiences. This book allows readers many entry points; whether you relate to being a newcomer like Gustavo or you are simply learning about what that experience might be like. This book needs to be a staple in every classroom!" - Rachell Plote, Illinois Resource Center
